Bento Boxes!

 こんにちわ みなさん! わたし わ べんとが すきです!

One of my hobbies is cooking! So when my family visited Japan this summer, we did a bento box-making class! It was a lot of fun to cook, shape, and decorate the meal in cute ways. I made a bear-themed bento, my sister made a frog, and my mother made a panda! The instructor informed us that the history behind bento boxes is that mothers used them to show love and affection towards their kids, and to help them eat healthier foods by making them look cute!  I hope to be able to make cute bento boxes like these at home and make it a little tradition to give to family and friends.

千と千尋の神隠し (Spirited Away)

 This weekend I watched Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. I loved this movie. It was interesting, but very special. It was good practice to listen to the movie in Japanese-- and I could even pick out some lines that I understood, but I also found it culturally educational. Many of the characters in Spirited Away are based on yokai-- the topic I wrote about last week. The movie holds heavy themes with Japanese folklore, and although there is a unique plot, the movie offers a beginning to learning about Japanese culture and yokai. I hope in the future to watch more Studio Ghibli and expand my Japanese listening skills.
